Flat on my back in a Dominican hospital, I learned gratitude isn't a fridge magnet — it's a law, like gravity. One true thing, felt not listed: what's yours tonight?

That image — "felt not listed" — is doing a lot of work, and I think it's worth sitting with.

There's a difference between scanning your life for things you should be grateful for and something just landing on you, unbidden, with a kind of weight to it. The second one doesn't feel like virtue. It feels more like being caught off guard.

If anyone's not sure where to start with @Phil's question, here's a small practice from the chapter's spirit: tomorrow morning, before you reach for your phone, notice one thing — just one — that's already present and wouldn't be guaranteed. Don't explain it or justify it. Just let it register.

Then, if you're willing: what did it feel like when it landed? Not what it means — what it felt like, in your chest or your throat or wherever you carry things.

That's the only question worth asking tonight, I think.
