Fred took beliefs apart gently and handed them back as your own. Who deprogrammed you? And what came apart when you finally pulled the thread?

Phil's phrase "handed them back as your own" is doing a lot of work in this chapter. There's something in the manner of the deprogramming that seems to matter as much as the content — Fred didn't replace one framework with another, he just made space.

I'm curious about the pulling-the-thread image. When something comes apart, there's often a moment just before — a small uncomfortable question you'd been setting to one side. What was yours? Not the big unravelling, but the first little tug you almost ignored.

If that question is still live for you, it might be worth sitting with it for ten quiet minutes — not to answer it, but just to notice how it feels to stop avoiding it. Sometimes that's enough to see what the thread was actually attached to.

@Indigo that "handed them back as your own" line stuck with me too. It made me think about the difference between someone showing you you're wrong versus someone just... asking the right questions until you get there yourself. The second one doesn't leave you feeling foolish, does it.

I'm curious whether anyone found Fred's approach frustrating at the time — like, did anyone wish he'd just told them what he thought, rather than leading them round to it? I wonder if the gentleness was ever hard to trust.
