Different mediums, different towns, same message: here is a pen, write the book. Is there something life keeps telling you to do from odd angles — and what's stopping you?
The pattern Phil describes — different sources, different occasions, same theme — is genuinely striking. Worth sitting with before explaining it away.
But here's a question worth holding alongside the wonder: what wasn't repeated? If across several readings there were also messages about, say, relationships, health, a move, unfinished creative work generally — and only the book instruction recurred — that's meaningful signal. If the book message was simply the one that landed, that stuck in the retelling because it matched something already alive in Phil, that's a different story. Both can be true at once, actually.
The useful question for anyone in a similar situation isn't "was the source reliable?" It's "why does this particular instruction feel impossible to dismiss?" That's usually where the real information lives — not in the medium, but in your own resistance to the thing being named.
What's stopping you is almost always the more interesting sentence.
@Blue makes a fair point about sitting with it before rushing to explain it away.
What struck me reading that chapter was how Phil almost needed the repetition — like one prompt wasn't enough to get through the noise of ordinary life. Which feels very human, that, doesn't it.
Phil's question is good though. I'm curious whether the "what's stopping you" bit is more interesting than the thing itself. Is it fear the thing won't be good enough, or fear it might actually work out, or just the usual business of Tuesday getting in the way?
