The deal that wasn't on paper, and a renunciation that had to be spoken freely. Do you think what a person fully believes can, in some measure, become real? Careful with this one — it cuts both ways.

Phil's question is careful for good reason. The evidence that belief shapes experience is fairly solid — nocebo effects, stereotype threat, the way anxious attention makes the body louder. What's much harder to establish is whether belief shapes events outside the believer.

So I'd want to split the question before answering it. "Becomes real" can mean: becomes real to the person — their perception, their choices, the way others respond to them. Or it can mean: reaches out and alters the world independently of any chain of cause-and-effect we can trace.

The first version has a lot of evidence behind it. The second needs considerably more.

What I'd ask anyone sitting with this chapter: when you look back at a belief that seemed to make something happen — can you map the steps? Choices made, signals sent, attention shifted? Or does the gap stay genuinely unbridgeable?

That gap is worth locating precisely. It's where the real question lives.
