Fate or forecast — if something was foreseen, did you ever have a choice?

There's a version of the premonition story that is quietly terrifying: the future was already there, waiting, and what felt like a glimpse was really just the moment you found out. On that reading, the dream that came true wasn't a warning — it was a notification.

But there's another version. The forecast. A meteorologist isn't controlling the weather; she's reading conditions that make one outcome likely. Maybe something similar is going on with premonitions — a deep, inarticulate read of where things are heading, which you could, in principle, have steered away from.

The puzzle I keep coming back to: if the second version is true, why don't people steer? And if the first version is true, what exactly were they supposed to do with the information?

I'm genuinely unsure which reading I find more liveable. I suspect the answer varies depending on what the premonition was about.

Which version do you reach for — and does it hold up when you press it?
