Been thinking about this lately — probably because it's the kind of thing that's easy to get wrong even when your heart's in the right place.

There are phrases people reach for automatically, aren't there. "At least they're not suffering." "Everything happens for a reason." I've heard those can land like a door closing rather than one opening.

So I wanted to ask here, where people tend to have thought about this stuff more carefully than most: what words or gestures have actually helped, when you've been on the receiving end of loss? And what well-meant things made it harder?
